At the request of quite a few diligent blog readers, I have accumulated as many panda vocalizations as possible over the last couple weeks. The following video shows a pretty expansive variety of vocalizations; the one that will be most prevalent is the bleat which resembles the call of a goat. Other frequent vocalizations are chirps, moans, barks, and honks. The most unique of these would probably be the moan which is best described as a call similar to that of a Wookie from the Star Wars films. A vocalization can also be as simple as just a huff, where the panda simply breathes out in a clearly exaggerated manner. Panda vocalizations have a multitude of different meanings: They can be aggressive, inviting, sexual, demonstrate stress, but a good majority of the time the purpose can’t be interpreted. There is so much information still being gathered and until more is understood, a lot of these vocalizations can’t fully be comprehended. Another difficulty with vocalizations is the timing of when a panda is going to become very vocal is extremely unpredictable. Often times a panda will be sleeping consistently for 30 minutes and then suddenly wake up and begin vocalizing constantly for the next 15 minutes. There can be weeks that go by with these stereotypic sessions where only a couple brief vocalizations are recorded. Regardless, the variety of vocalizations that a panda can produce is absolutely fascinating and is just another part of the intrigue with this animal.
