Hi everyone, Hailey here-

As you know, our time is growing short living in China and working with PDXWildlife. These past three months seem to have flown by; it’s overwhelming to look back on them and remember all the amazing experiences that I’ve had.

First let’s talk about the pandas, working with these amazing animals everyday has taught me multiple things

1) pandas eat a lot, and by a lot, I mean all day

2) sometimes you aren’t sure who is watching whom

3) they’re all unique in their own way, and you definitely develop favorites

From my previous blog post you know Queen Qiao Qiao (who just had twins) is on the top of my list, accompanying her is Wu Jun. Wu Jun made it to the top of the list by firstly, being adorable, and secondly he’s the only bear I’ve seen play repeatedly in his basket. It has truly been a magical experience to work with these amazing creatures every day, and observe their behaviors. Not only have I been able to gain valuable behavioral research experience, but I’ve been able to develop relationships with these magnificent creatures.

The people of China have been so welcoming to us in our time here, and are always willing to help with whatever we need. Whether it’s directions, help unlocking the door to the apartment, or anything in between they are always willing to lend a helping hand. We’ve been able to meet many amazing individuals with our time here in Ya’an. It’s been phenomenal to work with three other hardworking, amazing individuals. Through blood, sweat and tears (literally, just ask Bryan about the time he tried to peel potatoes) we’ve been able to create a bond so strong, we’re basically family.

I’d like to thank PDXWildlife for giving me this opportunity to have these amazing experiences, helping to improve the conservation of the giant panda by living and working with them in China.
